Apple - Boot Camp

Apple released today Boot Camp (beta) which allows users to boot mircosoft's windows xp or Mac's OS X on any intel based Mac computer. This is very cool allowing Mac computers to run any operating system. Apple again staying one step in front of microsoft.

but is this good for mac though? and "staying one step ahead of microsoft." will this actually help macs or will this be apple's undoing? if i wanted to buy a windows-based machine i can go anywhere i wanted and buy basically any computer, and it will most likely be a windows computer....if i wanted a mac, id have to get from apple or an authorized apple dealer...not only did macs have a brand name that attracted buyers, it also had a monopoly on that specific type of machine, thereby increase its consumer quantity further....so i am a little sceptical about whether apple's making the right move or not...im probably wrong since apple's stocks are rocking right now....it went up mroe than 2 dollars today, so clearly lots of people like this move....but still im unsure....by allowing people to load windows on a traditionally mac computer, this i think will decrease the value of the macintosh name and the apple brand...no longer is it elite in its category, but it must now compete with all the other windows brands of computers...sure it will attract certain buyers....there are those who like the aesthetic appeal and well-designed look of a mac powerbook, but were reluctant to buy a mac due to difficulties with opperating the OS...now with windows those people will look into investing in a mac....but that might be small scale compared to, say companies who might specifically purchase mac computers...with this move, there wont be that divide that separates the mac from microsoft computers, at least not as defined...im writing an essay here, so be patient, i have yet to disclose my thesis statement...=p

I Think if anything this will bring more people over to the mac side, now that they can buy a mac and finally use mac only software "final cut pro" (to name one) . It also this gives them a chance to get rid of that extra computer laying around the house that they need to just run windows. I have OS X on my windows machine and find it more apealing then windows, due to its sleeker more easy to use interface and its strengths in the media app field. Yes it seems that is was designed for people that don’t know how to use a computer, ( the too-easy user interface) yet I know when I am editing video on it, it is going to do it better (errorless) and faster then a windows computer with the same specs.

This link gives some great insight to bootcamp and why mac did this: http://apple.slashdot.org/apple/06/04/06/1243251.shtml

"To everyone who thinks this is going to be Apple's demise, you are completely wrong. No one buys a Mac for the hardware. Apple blathers on and on about how they're a hardware company, but that's bull. They're a software company, and they make the best desktop operating system on the planet.

No one is going to buy a Mac now to run Windows on it. They're going to buy a Mac because they've always wanted to try OS X, but they have a few stubborn applications that they need to run on Windows, and until now couldn't justify the risk of switching and losing access to them. People on here would say "Just keep a second computer!", but most people aren't interested in that.

It is absurd to suggest that Apple is going to die now that people can run Windows on their Mac. The whole point of a Mac is NOT to run Windows. That's why people pay Apple's high prices - for the ability to run OS X. Companies are not going to stop making OS X software just because Apples can run Windows - if people wanted Windows, they would've bought a freaking Dell!"- avalys (221114) @ Slashdot

Getting people to buy the mac system (money in mac’s pocket), being able fun win xp on mac (money in windows pocket, adds more computers to the market that they can install their software on) getting people to eventually switch over to OS X (money in mac’s pocket).

And even though the guy from slashdot said its not because of the hardware.... come on!, its nothing like having a new G5 with dual 2.5 GHz dual core processors and 2 gigs of ram upgradable to 16 gigs of 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM and a 21' widesceen LCD screen that matches the G5 box.

After using OS X in college it has become clear that it is better OS then windows, yet it seems to be more fine tuned to video, music, and photography. The "Arts" creating things of that nature yet if you want a computer that is going to run an app that will compute the credit score of a companies employees windows xp pro is the answer.
I bet after use of OS X for a while most people will find there is little reason to go back to window. YOU never hear of someone changing from Mac over to windows, it is all ways converting over from windows to Mac.
If anything this has opened up the whole OS market and has given the consumer the right to chose. It has been rumored that windows is going to put a new boot system in with vista, yet if that is true i would expect the release of vista to be delayed for another 6 months.
The secret weapon in the OS market which people should be talking about, Linux :
